If you’re wondering how to become a author of a book, then there’s some things that you really need to know.
First, you should know that you don’t need to be a fantastic writer in order to become a author of a book. I’m proof of that (at least in my opinion)! 😉
All authors started out exactly where you are right now; at the very beginning.
It’s this place where you’re considering becoming a author, but you’re not quite sure if you can really do it.
This is how I felt when I was wondering if I should become a published author.
I think all too often people are held back by the stories that they tell themselves. It may be that you think that “I’m too old” or “I’m too young.”
C’mon, you know exactly what I’m talking about! We’ve all done it.
The good news is that just about anyone can become a published author.
If you want to become an author, all you need to do is decide that you want to become one.
That’s literally it! You decide.
To give you a very quick story, I wanted to write my first book at the young age of about 17 years old. And guess what?
I did it. I became a published author at 17 years old. And no better what your age is, you can become a published author too. There’s no matter time to get started then today!
With that being said, let me take you through some advice based off of my experiences in becoming a published author…
How to Become a Author of a Book
1. You Decide When
What I’ve noticed about life in general is that many of us (myself included) hold ourselves back all the time.
We do this with our mindsets or our beliefs about ourselves.
I mean that we give ourselves limiting beliefs that we can or can’t do something.
Who knows, this could mean that you believe you must wait 10 years in order to write a book. Maybe it’s that you’re convinced that you need to be more experienced in order to get started writing a book.
To be transparent, I did write my first book on a topic that I knew a lot about; sports cards. But at the same time, I didn’t consider myself to be an industry expert on the topic.
On the flip side, if you want to write a fiction book, then all you need is a solid story! There’s really no experience needed at all!
I just want to get the point across to you that it’s completely up to you when you want to start and become an author.
If you’re looking for permission to get started… Well, you have my permission.
Additionally, if becoming an author scares you a little bit, it’s worth noting that not all authors are full time authors. To give you a real life example, I personally don’t just write books for a living.
Even though I do make money with my books, I’ve chosen that I don’t want to do writing full time.
And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
My point here is that you don’t need to be 100% dedicated to writing books in order to become or be considered an author.
Really all you need to do is at least write your first book.
That way you can say that you’re truly a published author!
2. Keep Improving
You’ll never regret improving your skills over time.
In retrospect, this could be in any area of your life. Although in regards to how to become a author, you’ll definitely want to continue to improve your writing skills.
Improving your skills will never hurt you. It’ll just increase your odds of success.
I believe for many authors (myself included), don’t consider themselves to be a great writer.
Although I do think that I’ve gotten a lot better over time, I know that I’m far from perfect.
Very far in fact, but I still put my efforts into improving myself daily.
I’ve done this by learning from other authors and also by reading just about everyday.
FUN FACT: Did you know that the average CEO reads about 52 books in a year?
Alright you got me, I know you’re probably not a CEO, but it goes to show that reading books really is important.
Remember, you don’t get to become a CEO by being a person that can’t communicate very well with others. And that’s an important skill to have as a author as well.
That’s one of the main reasons why they read, and why you should too.
3. Learn From Others
I believe that one of the biggest mistakes that you need to avoid is to think you can do everything by yourself. This is true for nearly any kind of career, regardless of becoming an author full time or not.
There are people that have been in the position that you’re in now and they know how to overcome it.
It would be rather foolish not to take advice from people that have done it before you. Now you do need to be careful who you’re getting your advice from.
It’d be really dumb to take advice on how to publish a book from a person that’s never publish their own book before.
Luckily for you (just in case you don’t know) – yes I’m a published author.
When you see other people having great success in their life and or career, it all can be traced back to their learning experiences which includes what they’ve learned from people.
Just think how far you would be right now if you didn’t have some type of formal education when you’re younger.
I’m not necessarily talking college but I’m talking about grade school. In all likelihood you’d be behind everyone else which is obviously not a place where you want to be.
The simple fix to this is just by learning from others that have done what you’re trying to do. That will make everything easier for you.
4. Set Goals For Yourself
In order to get anywhere, you must have some type of plan. You need to know where you’re going!
It’s hard to get to a destination without any sense of direction and that’s exactly where goals come into play.
Without them you’re bound to get lost and very frustrated. Take it from a person that’s done it before.
You want to make sure that you’re setting smart goals for yourself.
S.M.A.R.T. goals stands for:
You may have heard of SMART goals before, but I do try to use this method when you’re setting your own goals. You might be wanting to roll your eyes right now thinking that this could be a waste of time…
But I’m telling you right now that it’s not.
What is going to be a waste of time is you not taking the time to create smart goals. One of the worst feelings is to get to the end of the year to realize that you’ve come very short to where you want to be.
This all can be avoided by creating the right type of goals.
If your goals are to become an author, then set the goal of exactly when you want to complete your book by.
Don’t forget that your mindset has a huge role in how long you think it’s going to take to finish a book. I know people that have completed a book within 24 hours! To be fair. yes it was a smaller book, but it’s still a book.
On the other side, sometimes a book can take decades to create. Although it’s probably best that you don’t have that as your goal.
For most people having about a month is enough time to write their first book.
5. Know Where To Get Started
When you’re just starting out, things can get very confusing…
And very quickly.
You may have already realize this by now. It comes back to what I said earlier.
That is by learning from others that have done it before you is a smart path to take.
Now it is possible to do it by yourself, but go into that route expecting your journey to take much longer than it needs to.
I want to make sure that you’re on the right track and that’s why I’ve created my free blueprint guide to help you get started as an author.
According to the New York Times, having your own book is one of the dreams and goals of over 80 percent of Americans.
That’s pretty amazing if you think about it!
By no stretch is becoming a published author about becoming famous, but it is about the pride in the accomplishment of becoming an author.
That’s the main reason why I became one.
It came down to being able to achieve one of my goals and for the mere fun of it. If you go about it in that approach, you’re bound to be very happy with your results.
